Where Are They Now: #1... Steve Greeno

Steve Greeno, (also known as Slev Uunofski to some)

An appropriate nickname for Steve might be 'Short Spell Greeno' on account of everything he's done since this photo was taken has been in short spells. He attended Courts for a short spell of 5 years - less if you deduct truancy days, he tried College for a short spell but didn't like it, he was single for a short spell until he married Carol Leadley at the age of 20. The marriage ending in divorce after a short spell on account of Steve's general lack of interest (and roving eye). Most of his jobs have been of the short spell variety as well, the last real one being Ford Motor Company where he worked for short spells in the Truck Division in Basildon, then the PTO Division in Dagenham... Ford and Steve didn't see eye to eye on much... They didn't like his temperament or his roller skating ability, he didn't like their stuffy corporate attitude and management waste. Things eventually culminated with a financial inducement for Steve to leave. After a short round of negotiations, they shook hands on an equitable sum and Steve was asked to clear out his desk and leave immediately... Taking his heard-earned cash, Steve headed off for the States in 1981 never to look back... well, except for a short spells in 1982, '83, '84 and '85. Since 1986 Steve has lived for short spells in different parts of the State of California, the current location of choice being the Hi-Desert in the East Mojave. Here he has lived for the last 4 years... It's a pretty safe bet that this will not be the last place Steve will be spending a short spell.

There might be a case argued that Steve was the first example of an Attention Deficit Disorder student at Barrett's if anybody had noticed (or even knew what it was back then).

Steve did turn to a life of crime for a short spell at the age of 17 (or thereabouts). When he was working in London, (for short spell as a wages clerk), he foolishly stole a few old telephones from an empty office building adjacent to his own... Not exactly the crime of the century, but the Police did come down hard on him and even tried to send him away for this petty juvenile act. Apparently, during the actual theft act itself, there was the possibility that Steve had "entertained and considered" stealing more than he ultimately did steal, and that made it a major crime... Thankfully the Judge threw out the second 'Thinking About Theft' offense, and a short spell of probation took care of the remaining lesser offense.

During the short spells of this and that since Barrett's, there have been many high and low points in Steve's life which are the sources of his continued inspiration and personal reflection...

Some really embarrassing things that he'd rather not remember from this time were throwing lit fireworks through letter boxes for laughs and running away... and getting caught for setting some curtains ablaze at a workman's shed in Derwent Parade by 'brilliantly' giving a false name but the right address...

As for the sugar... Steve stopped taking sugar in 1981 when it was just too inconvenient to keep dragging around with him wherever he went and he thought it was just easier to stop taking it... As a result, things actually tasted nicer from them on.

In his own words:

His memories of Barrett's are fond... "I certainly enjoyed it better than Courts... things just weren't so serious then... I remember we had the best equipped playground with a great cubed climbing frame and swings, and a neat piece of rope climbing equipment... In fact, it was on this very rope climber that I had my first boner and wondered what the fuck was happening to me... "Excuse me Miss Vivian, why is my wee wee all hard and stiff?" "Put it away Stephen, I think you need to go home and have a talk to your parents... let me give you this note...."

It's hard (no pun intended) not to look back at Barrett's without fond memories... I remember the Parent's Day events we had and one year I made a bed of nails for people to lay on... I thought it was a great idea, but my dad was pissed that I'd used up all his nails without asking him... I also loved the playing field we had there... they were so big and green... I learned early on that I wouldn't be a world class high-jumper or sprinter, but I did enjoy distance running... the loneliness aspect of it was what I enjoyed the most.

There were some great kids at Barrett's and I often wonder what's happened to them all. With this internet project, it will be fun to see who's around and what they're doing... I know some because we kind of grew up together, but not many... And eventually every path went its own way. I'm especially curious to see what happened to some of the girls. I never realized at the time how cute some of them looked."

This bio may be updated at some point, but it'll do for now.
